Engineer-in-Residence

Receiving an EIR

Are you an educator looking to enhance the STEM experience in your classroom? This is the place for you!

Program Overview

  • The Engineer-in-Residence program is an experiential learning opportunity for K-12 students across Canada.
  • Classroom teacher gets connected with a local engineer for the school year to create custom STEM activities and lessons to support the curriculum.
  • The engineer mentor visits their EIR class MONTHLY to do presentations, activities, and share their personal engineering stories! Programming is customized for each class.
  • We provide the engineer with a multitude of resources to make sure they are as prepared as can be when they visit the classroom and to support them throughout the year (training, lesson guides, networking).

The EIR program is offered free of charge to schools across Canada

They were excited to see that chemistry, physics and math aggregate into something palpable – not a minor thing when some of the most asked questions we hear are ‘what is this used for?’ and ‘will we ever need this?’

Here are some recordings of presentations where we talked about the program. These and more are available on our Youtube channel, so be sure to check it out!

Next Steps

Here is what you should expect in your first year as an EIR educator. We are a very flexible program so everything may not happen exactly this way, but this is our general process.

Requirements

Time commitment: The goal that we set for visits is once per month. However, we understand that everyone (both engineers and teachers) is busy, so no worries if you aren’t able to make this happen every month!

Role: Most of the people we have request an EIR are teachers, but we do also have some librarians and principals who then ask the EIR to visit multiple classes. We are open to whatever works best in your school environment!

Communication: We mostly rely on email to communicate with you, so make sure to provide us with an email address that you check frequently. As for your communication with your match, you can decide on the method that works best for the both of you. Communication is key to making the program work!

Everyone’s welcome …. Kindergarden through grade 12 across Canada!

We’re with you every step of the way, and have lots of resources to help you out.

We do lots of hands-on things in our classroom but having an actual professional engineer to work with on projects was magic for the students.
