EIR T-shirt Fundraiser

This t-shirt was designed by mechanical engineering student & illustrator Nathan Tang. His design symbolizes the way that engineers are looking after the world, helping communities globally and shaping solutions to solve global challenges.

Funds raised by the sale of this t-shirt will go directly to support the Engineer In Residence Program.

The Engineer In Residence program is a volunteer based initiative that matches local engineers with K-12 classroom teachers across Canada.

The program is offered to educators free of charge with a goal of raising awareness about engineering in an inclusive way with an emphasis on social impact.

The EIR volunteers are passionate about inspiring young people in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and showing them the path to a brighter future.

Food Technology     Hands-on Activity

wheat-3205954__340

This workshop provides an opportunity to introduce the concepts of "food technology" to students. It begins with first recognizing how we define "technology", addressing the tenancy we have to equate the word technology with the last "fancy gadget". Followed by a brief explanation of how food technology has progressed over the years to allow us to support the needs of millions of people.

Kit includes*:

  • Material list & instructions
  • Connections to "real-world" examples
  • Engineering linkages
  • Printables

*Kit will be emailed to you upon purchase.

Recommended Grade Level: 4-8

Kit Price - $20

Re-engineering for Product Life Cycle

gears-3391064__340

This activity focuses on understanding the materials and processes associated with the objects that are all around us. How did it get here? Why does it look like that? Where is it going next? Though it is a recently-developed practice, looking at the entire life cycle
of a product (through Life Cycle analysis or Life Cycle Design) can really make a
difference to its environmental impact, leaving less material in landfill.

Kit includes*:

  • Material list & instructions
  • Connections to "real-world" examples
  • Engineering linkages
  • Printables

*Kit will be emailed to you upon purchase.

Recommended Grade Level: 6-8

Emergency Response     Oil Spill Lesson Plan

oil-310841__340

This activity focuses on the environmental impact of oil spills, allowing students to try different tools to determine the most effective solution(s) for clean up. Emphasis is
placed on the importance of sustainability and risk management, and preserving the environment for future generations.

Kit includes*:

  • Material list & instructions
  • Connections to "real-world" examples
  • Engineering linkages

Going with the Flow    (for Grades 5-9)

water-3342562__340

The lesson looks into how filtration systems solve many problems in the world such as improving drinking water. Students will work together to build a simple mechanical filtration system with everyday items to build their filter, test the resulting system and
evaluate the effectiveness of the different filtrates used.

Kit includes*:

  • Material list & instructions
  • Connections to "real-world" examples
  • Engineering linkages
  • Printables

*Kit will be emailed to you upon purchase.
