Hello all,

I hope that everyone is staying safe and healthy during these exceptional times!

Like most people, we’ve had to make some significant adjustments in our household over the last month.

I have three elementary school aged children who have had to deal with a new way of “going to school”.

First of all, I want to thank all of the teachers who are doing their very best to support their students (and the parents!) through this transition! 👏

In my personal experience, they have been patient and supportive. Checking in with their students to make sure they are getting what they need. And, setting clear and realistic expectation for them.

I wanted to share my own personal experience – what I have noticed, and learned as well.

To put things in perspective, I’ll start by acknowledging some of our privileges.

We do have unlimited (and relatively reliable) WIFI and 2 (out of 3) of my kids have their own laptop.

We’ve been doing online learning now for 2 full weeks.

Here are a few things I’ve noticed….

  • My kids needed a LOT of help breaking down assignments into manageable tasks.
  • They tend to get overwhelmed easily.
  • Teachers have been very responsive to any questions they (or I) have.

It has not been easy. But, I have tried to approach this as an opportunity to connect more with that part of their life and learn how I can support them better.

Pre-COVID times, I had a very limited window into their school learning.

“Hi! How was school today? What did you learn?”

“Nothing.”

….or on a good day “we did something fun in gym today!”.

But now, I am right along side them to help facilitate the learning process!

I get to see first hand how my youngest gets super frustrated when he doesn’t get something right the first time! And how my middle son gets paralyzed by a long list of tasks. I’m proud to see my daughter stepping up and trying to figure out more complex problems on her own before asking for help.

Everyone’s experience will be different.

But, even though we have to go through this time physically distanced from each other, we are not alone.

    Good to know, as I, as an EIR, try to help my class from a distance.
    Thinking: Less is more. Keep instructions clear — the challenge should not be trying to understand what is expected. Success is appreciated! Relax the rules around doing it right.
